Pasco Leads in Over-The-Year Wage Changes

In the third quarter of 2006, average weekly wages in Florida's 22 counties with 75,000 or more jobs, ranged from $580 in Volusia to $792 in Miami-Dade.  It was noted that while wage levels in all 22 of Florida's largest counties were either lower than or close to the national average of $784, over-the-year wage growth in 8 counties exceeded the national rate of 0.9 percent.

Seven counties in Florida had over-the-year wage growth that ranked in the top 30 percent among the nation's 325 largest counties, led by Pasco County, which recorded an increase of 4.2 percent and ranked 19th nationally.  At the state level, the average weekly wage in Florida grew 0.7 percent from the third quarter of 2005 to the third quarter of 2006, placing it in the middle of the national ranking at 26th.

Wage Levels

Among Florida's 22 largest counties, only Miami-Dade ($792) registered an average weekly wage that was higher than the national average of $784 and Duval County matched the national average.  Four other counties in the State also ranked in the top half:  Hillsborough ($757), Pasco ($756), Broward ($754), and Brevard ($738).

On the state level, Florida's average weekly wage ($713) was 9 percent below the national average.  This placed the State in the middle of the ranking at 26th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Florida's average weekly wage was lower than neighboring Georgia's ($752, 21st), but higher than Alabama's ($683, 34th)
